GRETA VON NESSEN (1900 - 1974) was an industrial designer best known for the Anywhere Lamp (1951); its versatility of function and clean, appealing form typified mid-century American design. Composed of an enameled steel dome shade resting on a bowed aluminum loop, the lamp can perch on a table, hook onto the wall to become a sconce, or hang from the ceiling as a pendant light. The innovative, multipurpose design was produced by Nessen Studios, a furniture manufacturing company that von Nessen ran following the death of Walter von Nessen, her husband and founder of the studio, in 1943. The lamp found immediate popularity and was featured, 60 years later, in a series of postage stamps celebrating the pioneers of American industrial design.
