Thomas Lias

THOMAS LIAS (1903 - 1960) was an American artist born in Dayton, Pennsylvania. He earned degrees from the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the State University of Iowa and also studied wood sculpture at Esculela Universitaria de Bellas Arts in Mexico.

While Lias did not achieve fame to the same extent that many of the leading artists during his time did, his work nonetheless exemplifies many of the same core qualities. In his art, Lias united key formal characteristics of the period’s painting styles with the prevalent graphic-design principles in compositions of architectural spaces.

His work has been shown in exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Davenport Art Museum, the Akron Art Institute, and the Canton Art Institute. Several of his pieces live in the permanent collections of museums as well.
